I had the good fortune to meet K, who was not only one of the top coaches in the world in his sport, but HAD given 40,000 lessons in his craft. After an initial social meeting, where he pressed me very, VERY hard with deep and personal questions about money, women, goals, it was clear to me that at age 83, he felt that there was no time to waste or beat around the bush.
Conversely, when we next spoke, they confided to me how they felt ‘completely overwhelmed’ at home, and had an ‘entire counter filled with paperwork!’.
I asked, ‘Would you trust me to come in, as a friend, and help you with it? I only ask that you give me no money for it, and let me give it as a gift?’ Yes it was, and once I arrived, dove in, and in exactly two hours had sorted it all out. A big pile. You try getting to their age and wanting to sit and file and sort and administer. Mentally OK? Yes. Good health? Yes. But we get tired. I am 57 and feel it now. What will it be like latter?
He took me to a nice lunch, at the Cliff House in Tacoma, and as I was leaving, handed me a WAD of money, saying: “Keep your mouth shut, and don’t SAY a word!’. And so it began. I have been back fifteen times, sixteen total, calling their bank, broker, insurer, insurer, medical insurer, filing wills, death certificates, the whole nine yards as they say. He trusted me with a lot of key info and with good reason. He said, ‘David, I have never seen anyone who could do this. You are remarkable’. I so love helping others and it was a win, win.
He said that he wanted to go on coaching, in the sport, and yet had concerns about their legs. Said, ‘If we have to get ALL your friends to wheel you on a gurney, to get you onto the course, and you teach from the bed, we can do that. I will do that. You are NOT done’.
I made a simple website for them, not that at age 83 they would find the whole world at FB or twitter, but to at least be searchable, since their teacher, who taught them how to teach,
